Has lots of useful A/V outputs on the back.Ĭons: Seems the TV industries don't want us recording OTA like we did in the VCR days. Unit can be reset through the remote if needed.

Recorded files are easily transferred/playable on a PC using the VLC program, which is free. With research, I've concluded there's nothing better around.
With patience, I have learned to love this thing. The EPG stream is slow, and that's not the Set Top Box's fault.
#Hw 150pvr manual update#
Be sure the EPG has time to update before selecting a recording event. I use a 1 TB pocket USB HDD, and record a lot of stuff. Between non-availability of decent chips and Tee-Vooh suing everybody, this is dark territory. Don't blame EPG system inadequecy totally on the unit. If you're freezing the interface, slow down a bit. Some stations are good, some provide no program info at all. The EPG and recording setup functions are not slow, but not fast. Seems resources for channel skip/delete and EPG are limited, You might have to just live with a few of those worthless religious/informercial channels near the top of the band. Update the firmware before even attempting to use it. Pros: Does what it's supposed to do, if you take the time to develop a "feel" for it. Samsung discontinued the S5H1411, so I presume the newer HW180 had to go with a different chip (M-star). The HW180 model has the same M-star CPU and Rafael silicon tuner, but uses an M-star MSB1237 demodulator chip in place of the Samsung. Overall Review: Chipsets: M-star MSD 7618 VLSI 128-pin CPU chip Samsung 6-th Generation S5H1411 demodulator chip, and Rafael 820T silicon tuner. The remote is a bit awkward to use at first: the buttons are arranged in an inconvenient layout but, like anything else, you get used to it. However, for this price point, a really good performer. Basically, if you have a strong input signal (greater than about -62 dBm) AND a good S/N ratio output from the tuner/demodulator (about 21-22 dB or greater), the unit will receive the channel (and hold it) perfectly. I also have tested (2) HW180 boxes and encountered the same issues, but see "Other thoughts" section for specifics. All 5 will lock to certain stations with ease, but the HW150 has trouble with the same ones. They all have different combination tuner/demodulator chipsets. Have tested it side-by-side with 2 integrated TVs (internal tuner/demodulator) and 2 ATSC set top receivers, and one USB stick receiver using the same antenna (outdoor 30-ft mast mounted with pre-amp). Very sensitive to signal level variations-has unusual reaction to combination of input level (in dBm) and tuner/demodulator signal-to-noise ratio: will lock to high S/N and low input combo AND to low S/N and high input level combo, but in between is sketchy. HDMI jack will output up to 1080p/60 Hz! Calling this device a "Converter Box" is somewhat misleading as it is a fully functional HDTV receiver: it outputs HD (via HDMI and component) and SD and downconverts HD for SD output on the composite jacks.Ĭons: Inconsistent reception quality: sometimes locks to stored channel when tuning, other times not.
Recording option with USB drive is a plus. Pros: Easy to set-up compact normal AC cord-no wall wart nice selection of A/V outputs. In General, this product doesn’t work with encrypted cable signal. Please Note: This product doesn’t work with cable company, such as Comcast, DirecTV, DISH Network, Time Warner Cable, Shaw Cable, etc. You will also fall in love with the convenient features, such as timing start-up & shut-down, parental control function, closed caption etc. Use it to record your favorite TV shows (suggest to use USB 3.5" external hard drive), and watch them at a later time. The Mediasonic HomeWorx HW-150PVR enables real-time recording and programmed time recording. It supports USB flash drive up to 64GB or USB 3.5" external hard drive up to 2TB.ĭon’t be upset that you’ll miss your favorite TV shows. The Media Player function allows user to play back video files via USB connection.
